More Rotten Apples

The wild weather we had this spring destroyed much of the apple crop in many states. This was of course from global warming, and don't let anybody tell you different. The price of fruit is up significantly, and we are seeing more imports from the southern hemisphere to fill the void. The 'good news' from all of this? The inventory of old fruit will be used up. Much of the 'low priced' fruit that you buy is up to two years old. Ever wonder why it doesn't keep once you get it home. It wasn't fresh when you bought it. Good old fashioned 'big government' could take care of this problem.

Rotten Apples & Sour Grapes

The Red Chinese Yuan set a record high this week compared to USD. The highest since they began trading them nearly 20 years ago. The Republicans are claiming they're letting their currency rise to help Obama with the election since Romney has 'pledged' to declare China a currency manipulator, something Obama has declined to do. Obama has good reason not to do this, because such move at this time would be political suicide. To cope with the consequences would take the equivalent of the war footing of WWII. The Republicans would impeach him.

Romney and his Bain company continue to work fist in glove with the Chinese destroying our industrial base, so Romney is going to get tough with China? He'll get his own planet and million sister wives first. BTW, massive super-pac donations have been tracked back to China, these benefit Romney of course.

Speaking of China, the gold bugs are pushing the line that China has a secret stash of gold that will drive the price of gold to $10,000/oz. Is there anybody here who doesn't understand the concept of Supply & Demand? Maybe all the libertarians who sent me shrill emails two years ago when I said gold had peaked at $1800/oz. It's still less than that now. Canned goods are up however, but you can find bargains this time of year, stock up. China's exports are up despite the stronger Yuan, they operate on the Alexander Hamilton plan. You know, the way we did things before Reagan, before we became a third world country run by oligarchs.

Darrell Issa who is Chairman of the Republican Witch Hunt Committee in the House is running hearings on the lack of security at the US Embassy in Libya. Some Republican loyalists assigned to Libya dutifully complained that the State Department wasn't meeting their security requests. What they actually wanted was their own aircraft, the State Dept told them to fly commercial. In fact they hadn't requested anything for the Consulate in Benghazi. That city was considered friendly territory, and in fact the locals rallied to the aid of the Americans. In the aftermath the killing of the US diplomats, the civilian population rose up, overran militant's compounds across the city and burned them down. We could use that sort of patriotism here.

Joe don't take no stuff

The Republicans shrill whining indicates they know that Paul Ryan just lost the election. That and Obama's seven point lead in Ohio. They like their Obamacare and their new auto company jobs. The corporate media dutifully tried to spin the debate in the Republican's favor, but that began falling flat when the poll numbers started rolling in. Most striking was the high percentage of Independents who think Biden would be a good President. Little Paul, not so much.

VP debates aren't supposed to be important, VPs aren't supposed to be important, but when Romney picked Ryan to save his candidacy from a tea bagger revolt, that changed. Republicans have convinced themselves with help from corporate media that Joe Biden isn't very bright and that Ryan is an intellectual giant. Reality was a hard slap in the face.

Conservatives all have the fantasy that they can overwhelm any liberal with their talking points. You can tell none of them even have an opinion of their own by the fact that they have nothing to say beyond the word for word talking points. When challenged on this, they just make 'stuff' up, after you point this out, they will try to shout you down. Failing with that, they run away, as Ryan did Monday when a Colorado reporter pointed out that Romney-Ryan's Grand Vision for America is nothing but tax cuts. He couldn't run from Joe, and he got the stuff kicked out of him.

The Conspiracy widens

Initial unemployment claims dropped by 30,000 last week to a four and a half year low. That's a lot of out of work people participating in the Muslim-Kenyan-socialist-anti colonial-fascist-liberal plot to destroy America by not filing for benefits in order to rig the unemployment number.

Layoffs are of course the result of employer action (quitting your job doesn't count), the employers that are, according to Romney, either lacking confidence (despite record profits and $5 trillion cash on hand) or going they're broke. Willard claimed in a stump speech that 1.4 million small businesses have filed bankruptcy, the real number is around 43,000. Willard was just having a Bain fantasy moment, even he hasn't destroyed that many businesses. Leveraged Buyout Specialists like Mittens have destroyed 250,000 factories since Reagan de-criminalized the practice. This number doesn't include small businesses with under 50 employees that serviced the larger factories that the Pirate Capital operations like Bain have looted. Maybe Willard knows his career number really is 1.4 million, it's a little mental trophy he keeps. Just like any serial killer who keeps lockets of hair.

One caveat, there was a government holiday this week so the number will be adjusted. So don't strike up the band playing 'Happy Days are Here Again', but this has happened many times and the number hasn't dipped this low before. It is still good news, it indicates that the slow, steady growth continues, and is picking up speed. Then there is the possibility that the adjusted number could be even lower.

The peasants all look alike

If you didn't already know that Willard was a sleaze ball who would try to make political hay off a dead serviceman, like any other Republican, here is an article,

This is the most telling paragraph,   [Glen Doherty's friend, Elf Ellefsen, also spoke with Seattle's KIRO, expressing similar disagreement with Romney's mention of his friend's death.
According to Ellefsen, Doherty found his exchange with Romney to be "insincere and stale."

"Mitt Romney approached him ultimately four times, using this private gathering as a political venture to further his image," Ellefsen told KIRO. "He kept introducing himself as Mitt Romney, a political figure. The same introduction, the same opening line ... [Doherty] said it was pathetic and comical to have the same person come up to you within only a half hour, have this person reintroduce himself to you, having absolutely no idea whatsoever that he just did this 20 minutes ago, and did not even recognize Glen's face."]

Even among Republicans, Romney is know as the guy that the more times you meet him, the less you like him. He claimed to be 'heart broken' after learning somebody he had met had been killed. It's pretty clear the only reason that he (or rather his staff) knew Willard had ever met this former Seal is from somebody else's recollection, or from facebook.

Drowning in debt?

The only talking point the Republicans have that is fact based is the size of the debt load, but of course they don't mention that the debt is entirely their own doing.

The bad news for this talking point is that the total public and private debt is now at a six year low compared to GDP. Let's see, Obama has been POTUS how long? He took over after Clinton, didn't he?

The truth is that the economy has been growing steadily since the Stimulus was put in place. Consumers have been de-leveraging, (not always willingly) but it has been happening. There are even economists saying we need to borrow more. Raising the minimum wage would make more sense, but the Republicans think the 47% are paid too much already. Always whining about being entitled to food and healthcare.

The dead Rat Bounce

Willard did get a big bounce in the polls the day after the debate. This wasn't because he convinced anybody with his litany of lies, but the media convinced Red State voters that the Rat race was on again. Most polls at this point only count 'likely voters', as opposed to registered voters.

However the polls numbers with people contacted over the weekend included those who saw the new job numbers, as well as the new Obama ads with Mittens debating himself didn't show the bounce. There aren't many undecided voters, once the Red voters realize everybody isn't switching their vote they won't be so interested in voting. They really didn't want to vote for Romney themselves, and would just as soon stay home.

The Rat race

A smattering of polls are out showing a huge Romney bounce from the debate, but overall they don't. And the 'huge' bounce is only 2 points in the more reliable polls.

The bad news for Mittens is that he still trails by 80 votes in the Electoral College. (no emails about the Electoral College, please)

Obama was running ads the next day illustrating Romney's blatant lies. The right leaning pundits claim they don't have to cover or even admit to the fallacies because Obama didn't point them out during in the debate. Which is yet another lie, he did point them out as much as there was time to do it. Responding to 26 different lies is nearly impossible in such a format, not counting Romney simply repeating the lie when Obama challenged him. If you listen to the debate and don't focus on the closeup of Obama looking down on the split screen, Obama won. Willard comes across as a giant sewer rat on Meth.

Nut Jobbers, a division of Birther Industries

If you haven't already caught on that the right simply makes up their accusations, here is a point to consider: the BLS household survey that is used to calculate the unemployment rate has 60,000 participants. They are asked a list of questions, and all of this raw data is available to researchers. It would be a huge undertaking to simply create all of the responses from whole cloth, on par with faking the moon landing. (the moon isn't real either, it's a conspiracy by astronomers to get grants, or maybe witchcraft) If you still don't believe, the calls could audited... no wait, all 60,000 random people who were called are in on the conspiracy (moon worshipers no doubt).
